Is your email account safe?

Electronic mail or email is the is a method of exchanging messages or data between people using electronics devices.Today mostly all email service are free and anyone can can make use of this services just by creating a account with the service provider.Email operates accross computer networks, which is primarily called as Internet, without the Internet no one can make use of this service.

How email works?

  • User first composes the email by writting all the content and giving any attachments if required by the help of email client on their computer.
  • After the email is ready the composer of the email will have to provide the emai-id(It is like a persons phone number which provides unique identity to the person for his recognition) of the person whom he wants to send the email.
  • When the email sender clicks on the send button the email is uploaded to the SMTP(simple mail transfer protocol)server as outgoing mail.
  • All outgoing email wait in the outgoing mail queue while the SMTP server communicates with the DNS(Domain server name-The receivers email-id) to find out the location of recipient's email server.
  • If the SMTP server find the recipient's email server location then it will deliver the email otherwise the sender will receive a notification of "Transfer failure".

As all this working occurs with the help of Internet and eachday we are getting the news of Hacking that are taking place in past few days we have seen the "Wannacry","Judy malware".So,in this situation a simple question comes in everyones mind. Is our email account safe?If not then what are the steps to secure our email account.

Steps to protect email account

  • Always use the 2-step verification method.Like in Gmail after you enter your username and password Gmail will send you a OTP code in your registered mobile number for cross verification. After entering the correct OTP you can access your email account.
  • Use a secure connection.
  • Keep a strong, long password by using the uppercase letter, lowercase letter, numeric values and special symbols. This creates difficulty for Hackers trying to crack the password.

  • Use the "incognito" or "private" mode of the browser when you are in public network or shared computer.
  • Always send  encrypted emails.
  • Consider using different emails for different purposes.
